Quiriguá is a smaller city located a few kilometers/miles north of Copán in Guatemala (see map). Its architecture and organization are similar to Copán with the particularity that the stelas are much taller.
Quiriguá was conquered in the 3rd century A.D. by Copán and remained under its control until A.D. 738 when it regained its independance by capturing and sacrificing the ruler 18-Rabbit. To commemorate his victory, the triumphant ruler Cauac-Sky erected the tallest stelas in the region.
